Oskaloosa--Lady Statesmen softball player Tyanna Helton (So., Santa Rosa, Calif., Palomar CC) earned the program's first-ever First-Team All-American honor as the NAIA announced its Softball All-American teams Wednesday.
A total of 60 players were recognized to the Association's first, second, and honorable-mention squads. Helton becomes the 11th individual at Penn to receive All-American laurels and the fourth in the last two years. Although Steph Christner was a first-team selection by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association in 2005, Helton becomes the first Lady Statesmen player to garner the honor from the NAIA. The sophomore led Penn in numerous offensive categories, including batting average (.456), hits (83), home runs (13), RBIs (65), slugging percentage (.769), and on-base percentage (.519). She also scored 40 runs on the year. Helton's marks in hits, home runs, and RBIs all broke school single-season records. Her .456 average also ranked third on the school's all-time list. Heath Vaughn of Emmanuel (Ga.) earned NAIA Player of the Year honors, while Amy Thomas of California Baptist was named NAIA VII Pitcher of the Year.
